Certainly, there’s a real sense of reconciliation here. Ellie and Joel have spent the majority of the game fighting against a disease borne of nature, yet throughout the game they’ve had to rely on nature in order to survive. If one views The Last of Us as a love letter to the landscape– which, considering the game’s loving attention to environmental detail is not an outlandish interpretation – the giraffes would be its most passionate sentence.
